Hezbollah leader Sheikh Naim Qassem said in a written statement on Wednesday that the group does not concern itself with who wins Israel's election and will continue its resistance whoever governs, according to Naharnet.
"We do not concern ourselves with who governs Israel, but let it be perfectly clear that it cannot continue its occupation and must leave our land," Qassem said in the statement.
Qassem also said there is no room to discuss Hezbollah's disarmament as long as the occupation and Israeli aggression continue. "The resistance will continue... and will stand up to the aggression directed against it and against Lebanon, and there is no room to discuss the disarmament," he said.
The statement followed Israel's election on Tuesday. With 85 percent of ballots counted, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing bloc held a slight lead over the main opposition bloc, Naharnet reported. The bloc was still short of a majority.
In June, Lebanese and Israeli authorities signed a framework agreement, according to Naharnet. It covers Hezbollah's disarmament, a gradual Israeli withdrawal from occupied territory, and deployment of the Lebanese army to the area.
Naharnet reported that Israel continues sporadic strikes and demolitions in and around the territory it occupies. It also reported that Hezbollah refuses to accept government plans to disarm it.
Naharnet described Hezbollah as once dominant in Lebanese political life and said two wars with Israel since 2023 have weakened it.
This account relies on Naharnet's reporting. The final result of the Israeli election, and which bloc can form a government, is not yet known. It is also not yet known how Israel or the Lebanese government will respond to Qassem's statement.
