Yousef Jabareen, head of the Joint Arab List, said his list will not join a governing coalition because of its political programme and its national, political and moral principles, according to BBC Arabic. He said these principles include equality between citizens, the Palestinian cause and the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders. Jabareen said his list is ready to work with the leadership of the opposition to bring about change, by supporting it from outside the government. Jabareen believes the most recent Israeli election did not give either the government bloc or the opposition bloc a majority sufficient to form a government on its own. He also believes the results deprived Benjamin Netanyahu of the majority he wanted. The report did not state how many seats the Arab lists won, or give the official election results. Jabareen said Arab-list MKs elected to the Knesset can play a decisive role in defeating Netanyahu's candidate for Knesset speaker. The report did not identify the candidate. He added that they are also able to block the passage of legislation that Netanyahu had previously backed. Jabareen said the new MKs can raise issues affecting Arab citizens inside the Knesset. These issues include crime and violence in Arab society, housing, and expanding the land boundaries of Arab towns. He also referred to recognition of unrecognised villages, particularly in the Negev. On funding, Jabareen said he is willing to publish the funding sources of the Joint Arab List's campaign. This came in response to reports that Arab party leaders had received money from foreign sources. Jabareen accused Netanyahu of playing a role in spreading these reports to influence the results, and of exploiting them to win votes for his candidate in the Knesset. No evidence was presented to support the reports that foreign money had been received, or the role Jabareen attributed to Netanyahu. These statements and accusations remain attributed to Jabareen, and the only source is BBC Arabic. According to BBC Arabic, the episode of the programme “Bila Qoyoud” that includes the interview will air on Saturday at 17:30 GMT.
