This page explains what data Daily Lebanon collects, why, and how you control it. We do not sell your personal data to anyone.

Reading without an account

  • Our own reading counter: we count pages read so we know what matters to readers. It sets no cookie. Your internet address and browser type are turned into an anonymous code that changes every day, so visits on different days can't be linked, and the address itself is not stored. With the code we record the page, section, the site you came from, your device type (phone or computer), reading time and how far you scrolled.
  • Google Analytics: we use it to measure readership. It sets cookies only if you press "Accept" on the cookie banner. If you choose "Only necessary", Google receives a basic measurement without cookies and without an identifier for you. You can change your choice at any time from "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page.
  • Images: story images load from their publishers' sites, so the publisher sees the image request, as it would if you visited their site.

Your free account

When you create an account we keep: your name, email, password (stored in a form we cannot read), your town if you give it, your language, the sections, outlets and stories you follow, and the articles you save. A necessary cookie keeps you signed in. If you ask to become a contributor, we keep what you wrote in your request and the articles and photos you send. Photo metadata, including location, is removed from uploads.

Alerts and the newsletter

  • Alerts: if you turn them on, we keep the address your browser provides for notifications, your language and the alerts you chose. Turn them off from the bell or your browser settings.
  • Newsletter: if you subscribe, we keep your email, language and chosen topics. Your subscription starts only after you confirm it from an email we send you, and every issue has an unsubscribe link.

Advertising

We do not show ads targeted at you as a person. When we show ads, we choose them by page, language and device type, and use the same anonymous daily code so you don't see the same ad too often.

Who processes data with us

The hosting provider that runs the site and its database; Google (analytics, as you choose); our email provider (newsletter); and browsers' notification services (Google, Apple, Mozilla, Microsoft) to deliver alerts.

Your rights

You can ask to see or correct your data, or to delete your account and everything linked to it, by writing to contact@dailylebanon.com from the email address on your account.
